John placed a cell phone call to a friend at 7:09pm confirming that he would meet for a dinner date in Oak Brook, IL. at 8:30pm, but he was never to arrive.

While no further communication was received from John Spira, his cell phone did continue to 'ping' off of two (2) local service towers until 11:00pm that night.

John's friend, Renata Bielskis, reported that she had contacted the St. Charles Police Department shortly after his uncharacteristic disappearance on the evening of February 23rd. The St. Charles P. D. failed to recognize Miss Bielskis' concerns for reason that she was not qualified to file a report.

John and his estranged wife, Suzanne, had agreed on the final details of their divorce settlement on the morning of February 23rd. She was finally coaxed into filing an official missing person's report with the St. Charles Police Department at 5:30am of the following Sunday, February 25th, 2007. The couple's divorce was to be official on March the 8th.

Although this case was originally filed with the St. Charles, IL. Police Department, it is now categorized under the jurisdiction of the Du Page County Sheriff's Office for reason that Spira disappeared in an unincorporated area within the parameters of Du Page County.

Some of John's employees at Universal Cable have officially reported a large roll of plastic wrap material to have been missing from the premises, but the Du Page County Police Department's position remains that they believe John to have simply walked away from his family and his life, stating that there is no evidence to prove otherwise.

John's Business was burned to the ground Sunday, September 16, 2007. The (now) gutted building that was once home to former Du Page County "Business of the year" nominee, Universal Cable Construction Inc., is co-owned by John's estranged wife and the wife of John's business partner, David W. Stubben.

Family of missing guitarist marks anniversary of disappearance
On anniversary of Chicago musician's disappearance, family still holds out hope

Inside the dimly lit blues club, Chicago Johnny played electric guitar for a few friends and family.

But the music wasn't live. It was an old recording, because John Spira hasn't been seen or heard from in exactly one year.

On Saturday, Spira's friends and family marked the anniversary of his disappearance in Kingston Mines, the famous North Side blues club where he once performed.

Surrounded by balloons, about 20 people chatted somberly as Spira's former band, the Rabble Rousers, played on speakers in the background. His black-and-white electric guitar rested next to a large photo of the 45-year-old St. Charles man who played under the stage nickname "Chicago Johnny."

"Most people get a funeral when they die," said his sister, Stephanie McNeil, who made her eighth trip to the area from her home in Phoenix. "John has got nothing."

On Feb. 23, 2007, Spira worked late, set up a dinner date with a friend, then disappeared. Family and friends fear the worst, saying they can't believe he simply walked away.

"John didn't leave on his own," said his aunt, Judy Whisler of Glencoe. "He would not have done that to his family. He had a [music] gig. He had a business. He had a life."

Since his disappearance, they have combed woods, put up signs soliciting information about his case and hung a banner over the Stevenson Expressway that read: "Find John," with his photo and a Web site, www.johnspira.com .

Meanwhile, several high-profile cases of missing women from the Chicago suburbs have captured the public's attention, including those of Lisa Stebic of Plainfield and Stacy Peterson of Bolingbrook. Last year, Peterson's family called a news conference to shine the media spotlight on other missing people in the area, including Spira and Scott Arcaro, 37, of Lisle, who disappeared one year ago Friday.

"Missing men don't seem to get the same attention, and that's not right," said Melanie Greenberg, Stebic's cousin, who attended Saturday's tribute.

In September, Spira's case took a puzzling turn when his West Chicago business, Universal Cable Construction Inc., was destroyed by a fire that remains under investigation. On Thursday, the skeletal remains of a man were found in a Downers Grove forest preserve, renewing hopes among Spira's family and friends that his case would be resolved.

But on Saturday, their hopes were dashed when authorities confirmed the remains were those of a 28-year-old Downers Grove man who had been missing since March. Spira's mother said she still holds out hope.

"His Dad and I are still waiting on the phone call," Maggie Spira said.

McNeil said, "My only hope is that we find him and get the answers we need."

McNeil said she wants to hire a company to conduct water searches for her brother when the weather gets warmer.

"I'll always search," McNeil said. "I can't ever stop. He's my brother, and I can't get past it until I find what happened."

'Chicago Johnny' still missing 2 years later

WEST CHICAGO- Police continue their investigation into the disappearance of "Chicago Johnny" -- a DuPage County businessman and musician reported missing almost two years ago.

John Michael Spira, now 48, was last seen Feb. 23, 2007, when he attended a work function that afternoon, according to a DuPage County Sheriff's office release. Spira is co-owner of Universal Cable Construction in unincorporated West Chicago.

Spira was at work about 7 p.m. when he made a call to a friend and arranged a dinner date for that evening. He and his friend were to meet at a restaurant in Oak Brook at 8:30 p.m., but Spira never showed up and has not been heard from since, the release said. His truck was found parked at his office.

Along with being co-owner of Universal, Spira was a recreational pilot and was well-known on the local blues scene, the release said. Nicknamed "Chicago Johnny," he was an accomplished guitarist and played with the blues band "The Rabble Rousers."

Spira is 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair.

The case is considered "active" and anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at [phone].

Breaking Benjamin is my favourite band of 2000s. Breaking Benjamin had so many hit songs! The ones I remember are 'The Diary of Jane', 'Tourniquet' and their hit 'So Cold'.
